The 9 Mile Music Festival was named for the Village of Nine Miles near St. Ann’s Bay in Jamaica where Cedella Marley Booker raised her son, Bob Marley. Both were laid to rest there and the village is an attraction for reggae fans around the world today. This year the 9 Mile Music Festival returns to the tropical cozy confines of Historic Virginia Key Beach Park with its Palm tree amphitheater and ocean views. In addition to the legendary lineup, the Festival features a Holistic Village with yoga by TRIO Yoga Studio, massage, nutrition advice, life coaching, acupuncture and sound healing from a didgeridoo ensemble. Its Food Village will feature the flavors of Jamaica and Caribbean prepared by South Florida’s most popular food trucks and festival chefs. Reggae, Rastafari and Caribbean-themed arts crafts and gifts are available in the Arts & Crafts Village and Phil Fung, a popular Miami-born artist of Chinese-Jamaican descent is also making an appearance. A drum circle will form by the beach and Nyabinghi drummers will play the thunder, funde and repeater sounds of the Rastafari culture. Gates open at 1 p.m. for an all-day celebration of Bob Marley, reggae, hip hop and the Jamaican culture.
Nas’ climb started when at 17-years-old, he appeared on Main Source’s 1991 classic “Live at the Barbeque,” hip-hop would be irrevocably changed. The Brooklyn-born Nas would go on to release 12 albums including, Illmatic, It Was Written, Stillmatic, God’s Son and Life Is Good to name a few. Beloved by #9M2016 fans, Nas makes his second appearance at 9 Mile Music Festival. Also from New York, “Lights, Camera, Action!” creator and one-fourth of Lost Boyz, Mr. Cheeks will make his 9 Mile Music Festival debut. Capleton, Konshens, Protoje, Kabaka Pyramid, Skip Marley and Styleon will crescendo a day capped by a legendary performance from Damian, Stephen, Julian and Marley. Together the Marley boys perform Bob Marley classics and the most popular songs from their solo catalogues. Damian, Stephen and Julian on stage together is not just a great reggae trio, but one of the great live performances in any genre of music.
