Grand Park celebrates Valentine’s Day with two weeks of romantic reggae — Online

Grand Park celebrates Valentine’s Day with two weeks of romantic reggae. Grand Park is taking love online this year with a celebration in honor of Valentine’s Day driven by the sounds of lovers rock.

The annual Grand Park’s Lovers Rock celebration, which is usually a live event held at the downtown L.A. park on Valentine’s Day celebrating the romantic subgenre within reggae, will instead be online this year from Feb.12-28 because of the pandemic.

So instead of DJs playing sets of romantic reggae tunes near the park’s Arthur J. Will Memorial Fountain, it will consist of a playlist curated by several DJs that will be available on the park’s Mixcloud and Spotify pages.

The DJs include Novena Carmél, the new co-host of KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic;” DJ Hoseh, who is a founding member of nonprofit radio station Dublab; model-turned-disc jockey Storm the DJ and others. Since the event usually includes food trucks, there will also be a food component this year via YouTube with Angela Means Kaaya, founder of vegan restaurant Jackfruit Café, showing viewers how to prepare a full vegan meal.

And there will be one live event during the celebration, an Instagram interview with Grammy-winning producer Aston Barrett Jr., band leader of The Wailers. The interview will be at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 28.
