The Mateel Community Center hosts REGGAE LEGACY CONCERT on August 5, 2023

The Mateel Community in Southern Humboldt County, CA presents REGGAE LEGACY 2023. This event will be held on Saturday August 5.

The Mateel Community Center proudly presents Reggae Legacy 2023 featuring the Grammy-nominated artist, BLVK H3RO. Also headlining is a very special “Lee Scratch Perry Memorial Set” by Subatomic Sound System and Screechy Dan.

Additionally, local DJ’s Tropicali featuring Just One and G Davis, and Mendocino’s premier DJ Sound System, Guerrilla Takeover will round out the entertainment.

Reggae Legacy is a Tribute to Reggae on the River

The last time that the legendary Reggae on the River festival was held was in 2018. Everyone in the music community misses it so much. The Mateel Community Center is still working behind the scenes to keep the dream alive and hope to announce a 2024 date for Reggae on the River. In the meantime, Reggae Legacy concert pays tribute to Reggae on the River on August 5, 2023 with this one-day event.

Blvk H3ro Headlines Reggae Legacy

BLVK H3RO is a remarkably talented and dynamic young artist from Jamaica. He has already made a significant impact in the music industry. t has garnered a devoted following over the past five years with his innovative and inspiring modern reggae sound. He has collaborated with renowned artists such as Bunny Wailer, UB40, Equiknoxx, and others, which has earned praise from fans and critics alike. Notably, his song “It Nuh Easy” caught the attention of the Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness. Holness commended its positive influence on the country’s youth. BLVK H3RO’s exceptional talent has been recognized by the prestigious Grammy Awards. In 2023, he received a coveted nomination for Best Global Music Performance.

Subatomic Sound System

SUBATOMIC SOUND SYSTEM was Lee “Scratch” Perry’s Brooklyn-based touring band, frequent collaborators, and producers of the acclaimed 2017 album “Super Ape Returns to Conquer.” It reimagined Scratch’s 1973 classic “Super Ape”, mixing the vintage Jamaican dub sound with 21st century bass and beats. Scratch & Subatomic & Screechy’s versions of “Chase the Devil” & “Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry is the Dub Organizer” have become some of Scratch’s biggest songs of his storied career.

They recently performed Lee “Scratch” Perry memorial sets at The Marley Brothers sold-out 4/20 Kayafest at Red Rocks. As well, they have performed at premier festivals: Cali Vibes and Cali Roots. The artists are currently touring with Stephen Marley.

With “Scratch”, Subatomic toured for over a decade across the US and beyond. Coachella, France’s Telérama Dub Fest, Berlin’s Loop fest, Dubai’s SoleDXB, and Hungary’s OzoraFest to name a few are among their itinerary.

The dub-inspired album by none other than Jack Johnson was released in 2023. As a matter of fact, the Hawaiian singer brought Subatomic on his recent European tour to support their collaboration on Jack’s new “In Between Dub” album. Moreover, this release includes several remixes by Subatomic featuring Lee Perry.
