Studio One Sponsoring Alpha Students To Attend Supernova Ska Festival In The USA

The Alpha School of Music is pleased to announce a partnership with legendary record label, Studio One, (studioonrecords.com). It will enable Alpha staff and students to attend the Supernova International Ska Festival (supernovaska.com). The event is in Fort Monroe, Virginia, September 13-15. Thanks to the support of Studio One and a longstanding relationship with Supernova Ska Festival, two Alpha School of Music Associate Degree students will complete internships. This will enable them to better understand festival production. It will also help them learn about performance and marketing. With Studio One, Supernova and Alpha working together, the past, the present and the future of Jamaican ska will be on display inside the Jamaica Pavilion for the 10th anniversary staging. To make it even more exciting, performing this year will be Alpha Boys School past student and Studio One recording artist Johnny Osbourne (“Truth & Rights”).

Alpha drum student Leon Channer, who previously received a scholarship award from Supernova for his music performance, says the Studio One Supernova Internship will help with his personal and professional goals. “This internship program will help me build professional connections and gain knowledge about live sound mixing standards,” he said. “I also want to know more about how other countries have added their own styles to ska and reggae.”

IMPORTANCE OF SKA

“The late Sister Martha Milner, when she designed the Alpha School of Music curriculum, was clear that ska music is an important part of Alpha’s unique ensemble programme,” said Gay Magnus, Director of Music at the Alpha School of Music. “And she was so right, because Alpha’s relationships with Studio One and Supernova Ska Festival have created many important learning and career building opportunities. The Supernova Internship will help Alpha students learn about the international music industry. It will also help them learn about Jamaica’s role in it and their own place in ska and Jamaican music.“

STUDENT SPEAKS OUT

Zuri Gordon, a violin student with a dual focus on music technology, is eager to take advantage of the opportunity to learn about the marketing and the story telling side of music and entertainment. “I’m looking forward to helping out at the Alpha booth and meeting ska fans from around the world,” said Gordon. “And I’ve always loved shooting videos and pictures. Supernova Ska Festival will be a great opportunity to capture a part of Jamaican culture most Jamaicans may not know about.”

The Skatalites, Tommy McCook, Johnny Osbourne and Johnny Dizzy Moore are just a few of the records released by Alpha past students on the legendary Studio One label.

PARTNERSHIP

Alpha is grateful for the continued partnership with Studio One. It is the premier ska label of all time. For its part, Studio One is looking forwarded to being part of the development of young musicians driving the next generation of Jamaican music. “We are looking forward to attending Supernova with the Alpha School of Music and ska fans from around the world,” Carol Dodd says. “Studio One and Alpha have had a long association throughout the years and from the earliest years of Studio One Alpha graduates have played a role in the history of the label. Mr. Dodd, the founder of Studio One, was always participating in, and keen to help, the education of Alpha students as he believed that Alpha would continue to be an asset to the students, and to Jamaica as well”.

Supernova founder and director, Tim Receveur, says Supernova is honoured to be able to bring together the past, present and future of ska. “Good music is timeless and speaks volumes,” said Receveur. “It is awesome that for our 10th anniversary, Alpha current and past students will be part of the Supernova Ska Festival along with Studio One, the Dodd family and ska musicians and fans from around the world.’
