Thirty years ago, Derrick Scott made a life-changing decision to join God’s army. Since then he has been an unrepentant Christian soldier.
Scott, who lives in South Florida, revels in that faith on ‘Deliver Me’, his latest song which was released in June. He produced the track for his DScott Music label.
COMMITMENT TO GOD
‘Deliver Me’ not only projects his commitment to God, but his refusal to return to a secular life. It was inspired by reading the Bible, which is one of his favorite pastimes.
“After losing my wife, I was going through a rough time, but my faith in God never wavered. I love reading Psalms, as it gives me some comfort,” said Scott. “One night after reading Psalm 91, I got the inspiration to sing it, so I started to sing a few verses everyday until it came to fruition and this is the final project.”
DELIVER ME
The first verse resonated with Scott. It states that, “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” Instantly, Scott began drafting what became ‘Deliver Me’, his first song for 2026.
Scott’s wife Nadine died in February, 2022. Married for four years, they shared traits that made them soulmates. Both are from Linstead, a market town in St. Catherine parish, Jamaica; and they got saved while living in the Cayman Islands, where they met.
As a gospel artist, Scott has released four albums and a series of uplifting singles such as ‘God Answers Prayers’. His songs express a change in attitude since accepting God as his Saviour.
“I have been a different person since my conversion. A lot of things I used to do, I don’t have the desire to do them anymore and it doesn’t bother me,” he said. Derrick Scott was destined for a life in music. He was raised in Linstead, which produced a number of outstanding artists including Phyllis Dillon, Joseph Hill of Culture and Freddie McKay. The latter is his older brother, who died in 1986.
BEGINNINGS
Scott started his career on sound systems in nearby Spanish Town, Jamaica’s first capital, which is also in St. Catherine. One of his contemporaries during that period of apprenticeship, was a promising deejay named Tyrone Thompson, who later found fame as Papa San.
With songs like ‘Deliver Me’, Derrick Scott never regrets turning his back on the world. And although there are times when temptation looms,
his resolve always wins.
