Gussie ClarkeRFG: What inspired you to produce “Dub Anthology”?

I’ve always tried to do new and different things. Recognizing that Jamaicans were not paying enough attention to this genre, I decided to create a unique product from my vast underutilized catalogue.

RFG: What does Dub mean to you?

Dub is a genre, an era of feel good music.

RFG: What is your favourite disc from the Dub Anthology Box Set?

Disc 3. It gave me the ability to present new and unreleased dubs

RFG: What is your favourite dub in the box set?

“Bamsta”. It’s new but it has a feel good nostalgic vibe that reminds you of similar beats from a different era

RFG: Where would you like to see the genre, Dub, in the next five years?

I would like to see more Jamaicans recognizing/remembering and re-innovating dub. Especially more of the current trendsetters who were not from that era.

RFG: What was the most enjoyable part of the Dub Anthology production process?

Dub Talks. Just the pleasure of having so many influential Jamaicans who were the cornerstone of sound system and dub music sitting together in one place and recounting their own history in an unscripted discussion.

RFG: Who are some of the engineers who have contributed to the project?

King Tubby, Phillip Smart, Cedricka “Solgie” Hamilton, Bunny Tom Tom, David Rowe, Noel Hearne, Mikey Riley, Ruddy Thomas, Sid Bucknor, Sylvan Morris, Errol “ET” Thompson, Errol Brown, Karl Pitterson, Oswald “Chunnie” Palmer, Mario “Syantis” Lawrence

RFG: Can you name some of the notable studios used in the creation?

KING TUBBY’S STUDIO, HARRY J RECORDING STUDIO, CHANNEL ONE

FEDERAL STUDIOS, MUSIC MOUNTAIN, DYNAMIC SOUNDS, TREASURE ISLE, TUFF GONG RECORDING STUDIO, ANCHOR RECORDING STUDIO, JOE GIBBS STUDIO, RANDYS RECORDING STUDIO

RFG: There is a film component titled “Dub Talks!” That premiered at Rototom’s Reggae University in Spain this summer. Can you explain the significance of this film?

We concluded that other than great music, it would be greater to have a visual component and include the authentic and key contributors of the dub genre. We intentionally selected some of the unsung heroes (sound system operators, selectors, recording engineers and artists etc) of Dub Music to tell their own stories and experiences.

RFG: Where is Dub Anthology available?

Dub Anthology is available on all major digital platforms and physically on Amazon and CD Baby as well as VP Records in Florida.
