Her upcoming releases include two singles, “Talk to Me Nice” and “Casamigos & Lemonade,” leading into her new EP Paivapo!—a project exploring memory, presence, and ancestral rhythm through an Afro-centric, reggae-infused sound.
WARM GROOVES
Themes of connection, joy, and cultural continuity flow through warm grooves, soulful vocals, and organic instrumentation. These new works build on the foundation of her three-EP project African Turquoise, which introduced her signature blend of mbira, soul, and Afro-roots textures.
Alongside this chapter, Piwai also announces the release of Zerua, a collaborative EP with Kenyan artist Nasambu. The project grows from their earlier recorded and touring collaboration, Portraits: A Series of African Stories, a cross-continental musical journey weaving voice, mbira, and narrative into intimate sonic portraits of African life, memory, and movement.
Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Piwai’s musical voice was shaped by Southern African traditions and early gospel influences. A dynamic performer, her sound has been described as spiritual nirvana.
COLLABS
She has studied under master percussionists Yagbe Onilu and Butch Haynes and has collaborated extensively with 3-time Grammy winner Fantastic Negrito, contributing additional percussion to his 2017 Grammy Award-winning album Last Days of Oakland. She has toured with him and continues to collaborate musically.

Piwai and her band Bassmint Gong’s live performances are immersive and uplifting—blending reggae warmth, Afro-roots depth, and soulful expression into a powerful cross-cultural experience.
Grammy Winning Music. Piwai played percussion on 4 songs featured on Fantastic Negrito’s grammy-winning album Best World EP. Piwai won Best World EP from The Akademia for her 2015 album “African Turquoise Volume 1”
